So what do we all think of the trailer then? My thoughts: 1) Danny Cannon's initial sweep over Mega City 1 > the shitty looking city in this 2) Karl Urban has pretty much nailed Dredd but looks like a greasy biker rather than a Judge 3) If things are going to be confined largely to one block, it's going to feel a bit claustrophobic Trailer was OK but made things look like a straight-to-DVD release rather than a tasty reboot but then I've not kept up with the comics for years, is this how it all ended up? |

I thought it looked pretty terrible in all honesty. A trailer is normally filled with the money shots to attract the audience and if these are the best bits of the film... Plus, watching flarey nostrilled Karl Urban gurning and doing the 'gravelly' voice the whole film wou;d drive me insane eventually. |

John Wagner loves it, so that's good enough for me! Can't wait :D |

I like Urban, and I think he's a decent choice for Dredd. This is going to be shite though. |

Wagner's approval means more to me than anything else, he's happy (apart from the cars) so that's fine. It's also set in the "past" of MC-1, with it having 800 million people (pre-Apocalypse War and most certainly pre-Chaos Day populations) and the West Wall hasn't been built so there's plenty of scope for things to change if there's any sequels. |
|||

Figured it would have to be set in the past as Anderson is Dredd's rookie, right? If there are sequels and they don't do anything with the Dark Judges, that's going to be a massive missed opportunity. |

I just saw the trailer. I loved the explanation for all the slo-mo, and that they had an explanation for it in the first place. |
|||

Reminded in of Dolph Lungerunds Punisher movie, and not in a good way. I assume there was a very low budget for this one then? |
|||
| |||
Yeah, it was pretty cheap to make. If you've not been reading 2000ad lately the you should, Dredd is pretty bloody epic at the moment, and lets just say that Mega City 1 is starting to look more like the city in this trailer every week.. |

I do keep thinking I ought to start reading the progs again but it's been so long, it would take a mammoth amount of effort to catch up :( |
|||
| |||
Nah, it's like riding a bike :D They do digital versions now too! |
|||
| |||
I recycled all but the choicest progs recently (and it felt like chopping off a limb) so have up to about prog 800 on a big-assed drive in PDF format. Digital would be very cool. Maybe I ought to ask for a sub for my birthday :) |

Thought the trailer looked decent enough, don't think it's going to be breaking any box office records though. Only started reading 2000AD back at the start of the build up to Chaos Day (last September or so) and loving it so far. |
|||
| |||
Well strictly speaking the Day of Chaos's build up started back in 1981 and I now feel old as I remember it... |
|||
| |||
I remember it being 6p :D |

I've only just washed off the biotronic transfers I got with issue 2 (or was it 3!) :) |

Got my subscriber copy of Empire today, there's a two page spread on the film and one part of it is a wide shot of the city. Joining Sternhammer (from the trailer) as block names are O'Neil*, Grant, Bolland and Ezquerra. The Peach Trees block that the film is set in named is after the cafe Alec Garland (writer/producer) and Andrew McDonald (producer) first met John Wagner. *although in this case, assuming it's in reference to veteran 2000AD artist, Kevin O'Neill it's spelt wrong. :-P |

Crazy self-referential stuff, love it! I'm sure I'll end up watching it and I hope it makes enough money back to warrant a sequel. If not, I hope it spurs enough fans to have a go at doing their own thing - some of the fan movies haven't been too bad. I'd love to see what the District 9 guys do with the Dredd universe with Weta doing the effects. |
|||

The film is zarjaz, helmet isn't too big after all, want a sequel ASAP. Urban does an excellent job as Old Stoney Face too. |
|||
| |||
I loved the little growl thing he did. Something that would never work in the comics, but you always knew he did it. |
|||
| |||
My only complaint is the same that Wagner had, the use of contemporary vehicles. However considering it's a modestly budgeted UK movie I'm going to let that slide. Anderson using an MP5 is fine though, it's not her gun. |

Can't wait to see it. Pity they couldn't have pinched a couple of those big-assed Land Rovers from the previous Dredd movie from the heritage motor museum just outside stratford. I had no idea how huge those things were till I saw one in there. Didn't rate the Stallone lawmasters that much though, or the crappy countach kit car he blew up in it for a parking infraction. |

Haven't seen the new Dredd yet (and am not keen on seeing it in 3D) but this review from El Reg worries me a little. It suggests that a lot of the character (of both MC1 and JD) has been removed, leaving a fairly mainstream, hyperviolent action movie... |
|||
| |||
I'd completely ignore that review, "I'm a Judge Dredd fan, and this isn't a fan's movie." Utter, utter bullshit. Oh and it's just over 90 minutes not just shy of two hours as well, fairly basic thing to get wrong that. This is the Judge Dredd movie that any fan who can accept that there wasn't $250M to spend on an Avengers style mega epic would want. It's a tightly focused Dredd story that is obviously set in the earlier days of Dredd's career. You could easily have seen this same story with Ezquerra's B&W art and Wagner's words a few decades ago and it wouldn't look out of place. |

Oh hello! I'm keen on seeing this as well, not a Dredd fan, but the trailer really appealed to me. Will see it in 2d though for sure. I just don't 'get' 3d. |
|||
| |||
You'll have a job, 2D showings are like rocking horse shit! |
|||
| |||
I'm not the greatest fan of 3D myself, but to be honest found it to be used really well in Dredd. Subtle but effective. |
