I'm putting together an article looking at games from years gone by that are, and will forever remain, beautifully timeless. In terms of both aesthetics and gameplay.

So far, and obviously in my humble opinion, I've come up with:

Super Mario World
Tetris
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker
Viewtiful Joe
Bastion

What am I missing?

For starters:

SWOS
Bubble Bobble (and Puzzle Bobble)
Lords of Midnight (on c64)
Paradroid
Pick a Cave shmup
Manic Miner
Ms. Pacman (or CE:DX, if you like)
DDR 5th

The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker

If you mean timeless, like, the sailing feels infinitely long, then sure. The game wasn't even finished properly, if you want another Zelda game (you don't really need one, but if you want one) one of the handheld ones would be better. Unless your are looking for separate entries for "aesthetics and gameplay".

I'll give you Rez as a very good shout but Doom and Quake? They're not easy on the eye.

Super Metroid is another great shout.

It's difficult to put together a list like this with seeming to have a Nintendo bias.

Limbo is another good shout.

Never played Baldur's gate but the rest of the games looked very much products of their time and have not aged well.

As frod says, Goldeneye in particular.

I'm looking for games that will still look visually arresting and play just as well in another 10/20 years time.

Hmmm that's a toughie.

I'd pick Starcraft. Mainly because if there was one game I would pick as the 'desert island game' it'd be that one, I lost hours to it and every time I fire it up for a bit of a nostalgic look at whether it's aged well or not, I end up losing more hours to it.

I'd probably also pick:

Defender
Manic Miner
Commando
Tomb Raider

...for starters

Knight Lore. Fucking Knight Lore!

You could class nearly all 2D games actually as timeless.

The playstation/saturn/n64 stuff looks hideous now.

We should start a rule. Any suggestions must be linked to a YouTube video for reference for those that've never seen/played said game before.

Phoenix Wright/Prof Layton games.

We all know what they look like.

And, for RPGs, I'd add Dark Chronicle on the PS2. Maybe DragonQuest 8, too.

ARGH MY EYES

Certainly isn't pretty any more (christ, so many PS1 games have aged terribly, makes me feel even older than I already do) but gameplay wise and for the amount of time it had me gripped (and the fact that NONE of the modern Tomb Raiders have managed to recapture that feeling) it deserves a bit of love.

But this is the crux of my discussion. Games that still look great today and will again in ten years' time.

Certainly timeless in terms of visuals though, and the gameplay certainly still holds up, regardless of whether people think it was too easy, the sailing was too long etc.

I'd say Ocarina and Majora are the better games, but they look a little rough nowadays (although the 3DS remake of Ocarina could be considered timeless, I guess).

Also, having played the first two Monkey Island games recently, I found some of the puzzles to be incredibly obtuse (is that the right word?). Sure, the writing is top notch, but I'm sure that, when it comes to the actual puzzles, there are better adventure games around.

I'd add:

Yoshi's Island (how could you forget this?)
Link's Awakening
Championship Manager :)
Snake?
Advance Wars

Forgotten half the ones I thought of on the drive home (I do feel slightly left out that HA ignored my first list, though :p )

Castle of Illusion
Turrican II
Lumines
Minesweeper
Vagrant Story
Dragon Quest III
Final Fantasy IX
Super Turbo
Third Strike
Soul Calibur
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution
Paper Mario
Pick a Treasure game

And I echo HA's opening post except Bastion. I don't think anything made in the last 2-3 years can really be described as timeless until proven.

With Bastion I'm thinking more in terms of the visuals. No amount of processing power would make that game look any better.

Alright Mr Picky, the PC 3DFX version wasn't too bad, certainly compared with most 3D actioners at the time but it's a real fine line to tread describing one game as ugly (simply because it's fairly low res and blocky by today's standards) then pouring love on pixel classics.

It's like trying to determine what art is. Considering its age and scope, Tomb Raider did an extremely good job of immersing me in its gameworld (far more so than Doom or Quake which have also been bandied around on this thread) so the visuals couldn't have been that abhorrent :)

Can't discount games purely for stuff like colour clash (that would be half the speccy classics binned) blocky low-res visuals (that'd discount virtually the entire PS1, Saturn and N64 catalogue) or slightly wibbly art direction (pretty much anything from the first 10-15 years of gaming would end up binned - programmers really weren't artists back then).

Hmm, in which case maybe you want to talk about game ART?

Your thought process there can't be levelled at Tetris for instance.

Monster Hunter. That's timeless. They never change the mechanics or the graphics.

The point is, Tomb Raider would be improved by better graphics. Tetris would not.
