A new PC-only space sim that's just been officially announced today - see the website here and the impressive launch trailer here.

I'm not really much of a PC gamer these days but I spent many happy hours with the Homeworld and X-Wing/TIE Fighter games back in the day, and this definitely ticks the same sort of boxes. It's a brave move to try and develop something this ambitious without a publisher to back it (it's part crowdfunded, part private investors) and hope it gets somewhere as it looks very nice (although of course, in the grand tradition of space sims, all of those lovely-looking ships will spend most of their time on-screen as pixel-high specs in the distance. Lovely-looking specs though).

Very impressive looking. There have been a few decent space shooters recently but this really looks like the sort of game I've been hoping someone would do for a long time.

Shouldn't have any problem securing a publisher I'd have thought.

They're not looking for a publisher - they're aiming to fund it via a mix of private investors and croudsourcing. Should be interesting for a project of this scale.

Reading up on it some more it appears it's more like an MMO than a traditional space sim, although they do use Demon's Souls as a reference point for how players might cross over between games, so I'm not really sure how far the MMO aspects will reach (personally I'd prefer a well-paced and scripted single player experience, although I suspect they would find it even harder to get funding for something like that).

Think I'd lose interest in it if it was an MMO. Unless they're thinking about an online persistent campaign that you as a single player have some feed into - rather than having to align to a clan or constantly play with others to succeed or progress.

A well plotted mission rich single player game would rock my world but at this point in time I'd have to have a look at it just because it really does look stunning.

Arrgh... ANOTHER reason why I'm running out of excuses to delay my PC build! I lost track of PC gaming around '99 - the X-Wing / franchise being a real favourite.

The launch vid definitely shows some Wing Commander heritage. I wonder if they'll introduce any newtonian stuff?

I'm still hoping for an Elite4. :-)

As I understand it, you've got plenty of time - the video is test footage only, they're talking about a closed alpha being 12 months away and a closed beta at twice that.

Looks lovely, although I'm always wary of small 'test' areas since it's very easy to make something like that look amazing but to then find it's completely impractical to recreate that in a full level, either because of technical or production restrictions. You would hope they have the experience to not make that mistake though.

Looks fantastic. It is about time the space sim made a come back. The Wing Commander series was always one of my favourites.

The one thing they can drop from the genre is those escorts missions where you have to protect a capital ship from enemy torpedoes. I always found these the most frustrating missions in the Wing Commander games as the ai seemingly can't shoot a torpedo that travels at a constant speed in a straight line!
