Oh well, Criterion had to drop the ball eventually. Playing this so soon after Forza Horizon was a bit of a mistake. It's a flipping shambles. Odd stuttery graphics (weird pauses mid-race for a fraction of a second but enough to really piss you off), no sign of anti-aliasing, the clunkiest menus I've ever seen (Easy Drive my arse) and some seriously terrible sound mixing (how hard would it have been to mute the rubbishy soundtrack while the voiceover woman is giving you important info?).

Yet under there somewhere is the ghost of Burnout Paradise so I guess I've got to get back in there and fight the thing to the ground somehow.

Not an instantly impressive and fabulous game like NFS Hot Pursuit was nor Burnout Paradise, for that matter - and seriously lacking the slick smoothness of Forza Horizon. Definitely can understand why this wasn't demoed before release.

Weird. When I got to play this at the other place's expo, it seemed a lot more slick than Horizon. Admittedly I didn't spend very long with it because I picked up someone else's game and they'd driven way off course, so I just spun around and did a few handbrake turns, which worked a lot better than they did in Horizon.

I mostly like it so far..
I like the exploration angle and I thought the handling was better than hot pursuit, but the races were just me trying to flick my eyes between the map in the corner and a tiny spec in the distant horizon for traffic, the flashy lens dirt filters didn't help either.
/glances at map

/crashes again.

I think it will get easier as you learn the map, just keeping an eye out for the checkpoint indicators, they normally place them just after any junctions so you know which way to go.

The car handling isn't bad at all and I agree it's better than NFS Hot Pursuit (and Burnout Paradise for that matter). I just find some of the stuff really horribly clunky.

The way you start a race..

The way you apply upgrades through the 'quick' menus

The way you need to do stuff when you're being slammed into walls by a cop car, but can't because the game doesn't pause while you're doing the menu thing.

I guess this is to 'punish' normal game pad users for not being wise enough to own Kinect. It's apparently all a breeze using Kinect's voice control. Only it isn't for me because I still can't seem to get Kinect to calibrate to a low voice. Works if I scream at it but I don't really want to do that when my daughter's sleeping a couple of rooms away at the only time I get to play games (night time when she's fast asleep).

It might grow on me though. I did my first Top 10 MW race this morning in an Atom and that was fast, frenetic and bloody hard!

Really wish the game didn't keep micro-pausing though, it's bloody offputting.

I wondered if it was a symptom of having the game installed over having it running from disk. It happens usually when I'm doing something that triggers a 'write' to the Autolog wall. Very offputting.

Apparently the Vita version of this game is pretty close to the home console versions. Lots of people raving about how good it is :)

Reviews I've read about the Vita version say that, although it's a great-looking port, the lack of cars and details means it misses the essence and fun factor of the home console versions.

I really wish there was a demo of this on the 360.

It's an odd move for EA. I can see why they didn't do it, but it's not like EA to put out the game before the demo.

Might turn up next week once they've got a few knee jerk sales (like mine) under their belts.

Actually I think it's a Criterion thing. Pretty sure the same happened with Burnout and when I worked there I seem to remember them refusing to do a "slice" until the work on the game was finished as it would have taken resource away from getting the game done.

Burnout Paradise had a really good demo, showed off the game well and came out well in advance of the game. Hot Pursuit had a decent demo too.

Wow this game is so bad I spent 7 hours (according to Raptr) playing it yesterday and only stopped because my hands hurt from using a controller so much.

It's Burnout Paradise and Hot Pursuit squished together and it's great.

Shame it doesn't look as nice as Forza Horizon though but it's doing more built up areas than that game and is very different in what it's about too.

Thought you'd like it somehow. I bet it doesn't 'pause' for you either :)

Nah there's definite stuttering now and again, technically it feels like a game a generation older than Forza Horizon, although it is doing more complex scenery.

It's also bonkers, intro only of one race and intro + full race.

One of my favourite race starts is like going on a theme park freefall/drop tower ride down the side of a building and you fall straight into your car. I'll have to cap that.

I really love the way they've done the pre-race intros, you really don't know what you're going to get.

I think they're mental! Good but mental! There's one where all the cars are flying through the air like some weird Back to the Future Part II Homage.

Glad to hear others are seeing the stuttering though. I buy that it's throwing around some pretty complex scenery but so was Burnout Paradise, and it was a bigger city wasn't it?

Moans aside, the top ten most wanted races are superbly hard and punishing. One mistake and you might as well hit 'retry' because you will really struggle to get back from a mess up.

(favourite race so far is the jumping jack one, could just play that over and over).

Should've been before release not after, but welcome nonetheless.

Had a lot of fun with it last night, in the end - mostly because my other half has suddenly discovered she likes it a lot and had a great time trashing my newly acquired MW vehicles.

I swear though, AsphaltOnline is no human. Working at "that place that does that big game you might have heard about" seems to be turning him into a driving-game automaton with Whizzo and myself usually nipping at his heels

Seems like NFS: Rivals is the true successor to Burnout Paradise.

Hope there's a demo

Really!? I thought it looked a lot like Hot Pursuit (which I didn't like) and actually thought Most Wanted was quite similar to Burnout Paradise - love both of them.
