Oh, go on. I've had four emails with Christmas in the title and been asked what I want already... it's practically the end of the year. (Please note, I do not endorse that statement at all!)

Not sure if we'll do the big article of past years this time, but I'm very curious to hear what's hitting up your potential top ten lists. (Plus, it's a slow work day).

I've missed a lot of games this year (well, compared to previous years) and I'm curious what's worth picking up for buttons in the sales.

Go on... indulge me. You know you want to.

Potential GotY candidates for me(well potentials for a top ten list, anyway):

Retail:

Sniper Elite v.2
Max Payne 3
Dragon's Dogma
Sleeping Dogs
Spec Ops: The Line
Binary Domain
Borderlands 2
Dishonored
Syndicate
Silent Hill: Downpour
Assassin's Creed 3
Armored Core 5
The Darkness 2
Resi Evil: ORC (yeah, yeah, piss off)

Downloadable titles:

Mark of the Ninja
Awesomenauts
Counter Strike
Journey
Okami HD
Trials Evolution
The Walking Dead
Deadlight
I am Alive
Tokyo Jungle

Hopeful late entrants:

Hitman: Absolution
Far Cry 3

Add to that:

XCOM
Modern Warfare 3
Rock Band Blitz
Black Ops2

None of those will win, though.

Journey gets my vote, no question. Mainly this is because it is a beautiful, engaging, thrilling, beautifully crafted experience with a simple but wonderfully told story at the heart of it but also because, er, it's actually the only game I've played this year that was actually released this year. :)

hmmm this would be a real tough list for me to try and write. I've enjoyed the heck out of:

Binary Domain
Max Payne 3
Sleeping Dogs
Trials Evolution
Deadlight
Journey
Motorstorm RC

but I'd really struggle to name just one that absolutely blew me away. MP3 is looking like the surprising lead contender though. Thought it was as slick as hell and very enjoyable.

Journey for me as well. For pretty much the same reasons as nekotcha mentioned.

If we count games not released this year, I would add MGS4 to that list. So much attention to detail!

Ah yes, I knew there was at least one really good game from this year that I played.

Not without its issues, with some of the later obscure puzzles being more annoying than fun, but still my GotY by a mile.

Actually, Rayman Origins on the Vita would be up there, but technically that's from last year.

I confess, I've not actually played that much this year, but Fez all the way.

Ah, well, if we count games not released this year I would definitely say Demon's Souls. Stupid, hateful, wonderful, brilliant thing that it is.

Actually come to think of it I played Mass Effect 3 this year too. Although I never finished it because my stoopid XBox blew up. It was very well done but it's just that thing where it was such a known quantity that it was hard to get particularly excited about. So, Journey then.

I am also awaiting the inevitable discussion of "We can't just do a GotY, that's really boring, what else can we do?", followed by the inevitable conclusion that nobody can actually think of anything better.

(It's possible I may have been here too long at this point).

My poor addled memory just never lets me recall what's actually been released in a particular year. I know SSX came out (and was massively disappointing). I know we've had Mass Effect 3, and I know that - as usual - the autumn release slot has been stacked to the gills with stuff, but I always forget what has been out this year.

Need to trawl through my buying history on Amazon I guess.

Exactly this for me too. Actually finished a few games this year (for a change) but most were released last year - Saints Row 3 being the standout. Hopefully have more gaming time from now on though as I've finally finished my ACCA exams :D

How about an article of games we heard were good this year but didn't play coz we're all old and don't have the time or patience?

Which games do you wish you'd played this year?
Why didn't you?

I missed Tokyo Jungle and Darkness 2. Apathy mainly.

I've only bought one game that came out this year: DOA5. That HAS to be my game of the year?

That sounds like a much more sensible idea!

Rayman Origins (Vita) - Didn't buy it because I would want to play it on a big screen. But I didn't buy for PS3 because when that was released I didn't have a PS3 here.
SSX - Same as Rayman, except that now I won't buy it because they took the demo of the store so I can't test whether I like it or not...
I Am Alive - Just didn't buy it, despite liking the idea.
Tropice 4 - Don't have an Xbox
Trials Evolution - Don't have an Xbox
PixelJunk 4am - Left the Move controller behind when I moved last year.
Sleeping Dogs - Did not have time to buy it and I can't find it in any of the shops around here.
XCOM Enemey Unknown - I bought Dark Souls instead.
Forza Horizon - Don't have an Xbox, but this game is making me consider getting one soon.

PS: I'm not old. :)

Dang, I really do need to pick up Rayman when the teetering tottering pile of shame isn't so teetery and tottery

Well, the Prepare to Die Edition just got released so yes!
And that means I can put two games on my list. Dark Souls and Journey. Two games that could hardly be more different. :)

(Yes, I only beat the first boss so far, but the 8 hours or so it took me to get there were already better than many games I finished.)

Dark Souls would easily be my GotY too, if we're counting games we only got round to playing this year.

Well worth getting on the Vita, it's an absolutely perfect fit for the console. Although I do understand wanting to experience the beautiful 2D art on a bigger screen. Either way, play it - great game, especially if you want a challenge (I'm rather proud of my Platinum on it).
