It is quite a bargaintastic little collection isn't it?

The Xbox 360 version will be the third format I've played HL2 all the way through on.

You expect solid dates from an EA press release?! :)

Pete, I hope you weren't responsible for those box mock ups !

Winter?! o_O

I'm looking forward to picking up the big box of everything (the orange one?) for the 360, but next winter is one long time away. I'm fairly certain I'll have lost interest by then, which is what happened to me with HL2 the first time around.

As nice as the console versions maybe, I'll stick to the much cheaper and many, many more players supporting PC version.

Playing Team Fortress without a mouse just wouldn't be right.

So, despite some suggestion not to (given that I've never played HL1), I've been playing HL2. I don't think I've progressed very far (Chapter 4), and my view of it keeps changing.

On the one hand, it looks pretty rough (playing on PS3, and it is 7 years old!), but more than that some of the mechanics feel so clunky and cumbersome - platforming seems weak (which is odd considering that Portal is on the same disc!) and controlling that stoopid air boat through the canals is a nightmare. Who decided that accelerate and steer should be on the same stick!?

But then, the actual game content can be a lot of fun - speeding through the canals, trying to avoid a bomb-dropping helicopter was ace and it's an interesting story.

I've clearly been spoiled by what's come since, but I can see why the game made such a big impact when it was originally released.

Looking forward to getting another couple of hours in on Saturday night :)

Yeah, I sussed that our quite late in that level - basically down to my last few bullets, so Iwas forced to experiment with the Gravity Gun, to much fun and enjoyment :)

Yeah, that's another thing Valve are good at - always making you feel like you've never got quite enough bullets. In HL2 this leads to a lot of experimentation with the gravity gun, which clearly was the intention. That was a standout moment for me though, it's the perfect example of gameplay that feels emergent even though it was clearly designed to work exactly that way.

The PS3 version doesn't have any. But it's actualy a nice change to play a game where I can give no consideration to Trophies :)

Played through a section of Highway 17 last night, including where I had to take out a helicopter with a rocket launcher :D

Unfortunately, the NPC instructions weren't clear, so I didn't know how to stop it shooting down my rockets.

It's a brilliant change of scene and pace after the spooky and clastrophobic Ravenholm, although the handling of he buggy is appalling.

Hah, I did the exact same thing. Took me ages, that bit. To this day I tend to play games with the subtitles on because I've had far too many instances where I've missed a key plot point or instruction because of NPC dialog happening at the same time as a massive explosion or something.

After my 4 week break (due to holiday and other commitments), I returned to this at the end of last week and have just reached Nova Prospekt.

One thing I'm loving about this game is the excellent pacing - the steady drip-feed of new equipment or game-changing events. For example - one minute the Antloins are a pain in the arse enemy, the next they're your allies...

Top stuff.

Incidentially, would I be best to roll straight into Episodes 1 and 2 after I finish this? How long are the respective episodes?

I played Episode 1 in 2011, about three years after I finished HL2, and I've yet to play Episode 2. Actually, now might be about the right time to remedy that...

Anyway, there's no need to rush into the episodes. :)

Edit: Ep1 was rather short - about 4-5 hours - but 2 is apparently much longer.

You won't go far wrong with either of the episodes - Ep1 doesn't really break any new ground (and as I recall is a bit slow to get going), but Ep2 has some great moments, albeit with a fairly annoying final section. Not sure what they'd feel like playing them straight after the main game though - I came to both of them ages after playing the original game so it was nice to return to HL2's world an mechanics. They might feel a bit repetitive playing them back to back.

I think I'll play something else after finishing the main game and then go back for Ep1 & 2.

Got another 'session' tonight, and really looking forward to it :)

Surely the one rule when you're playing alongside a computer-controlled coop partner is that they don't run ahead and get killed on a repeated basis.

Goddamit Alyx - just stay back and let me deal with these b*stards!
