I'm collecting ideas for an upcoming article and I need your help. The article is to be entitled "The House of Lies" and is about those little white lies, sneaky fibs or downright huge whoppers that the industry and wankerish gaming execs trot out to us in the vain belief that we'll swallow them whole. F'r instance, so far I've got the Xbox 360 "no systemic hardware failure" one, Sony's incredible PSP blog, Bullshots and the "smoke and mirrors" wiimote stuff.

Can anyone think of any more I should include without turning this into too much of a troll fest?

Cheers

360 Core system: £199.

Alright, that's fairly cheap.

Oh wait...

Memory Unit: £35
Game: £50
Xbox Live Gold: £40
VGA/Component cable: £15
Hard Drive: £70
Wireless Cont: £30

You'll inevitably spend over £300, thanks to said pricing scheme. Thieving basts.

Oh, and while we're at it, why the funk did MS get away with selling me a 20GB HDD with only 12GB available storage space? And even then, I can only store demos, downloaded videos and music ripped from an original CD. And those tracks are stored in shitty WMA format. Plus, the audio on some of those Marketplace videos is compressed horrendously, or the video is letterboxed, or pixelated.

In fact, the whole 'media hub' concept is a sham. Probably not as shocking as the 360's backwards compatability...

Pity they don't sell an all-in-one pack giving you all of that (barring a year's Live Gold).

OH WAIT

They do. And these days you frequently find them giving an extra wireless controller and at least one game.

Yeah, extra stuff not being free. Shocking O_o Especially if you're dumb enough to want all that but not buy a core.

I cant think of any real lies. Maybe its because I'm not naive to fall for any of it...

The Core is billed as a budget system, when in fact half those things are pretty much essential and, due to the iffy pricing, add to the cost significantly.

I just thought it was a bit of a 'lie' to claim (in big bold green lettering on the front of your local GAME) that you can have the next-gen experience for only 200 quid.

Did you say three just because you know that 'game' and 'memory unit' are the essential ones?

He listed 6 things and said half were essential.

Having said that, buy a harddrive and you dont even need the game.

Factoring the cost of a game seems a bit of a shit item to add anyway. Its not like MS are hiding the fact that *shock* you need games to play on *shock* a games console.

Fair enough, didn't really read in detail what he posted, but the sentiment is spot on: the core is an incomplete system, and you needed to spend more than £200 to be able to use it properly.

No different to many of the old lauches though was it (the non Memory card thing - which is the only essential bit really)?

I remember one of my friends had GTA running for about 4 months solid due to a lack of a memory card.

...then there was a power cut. :(

You could argue that you need a big screen HDTV and 5.1 system to use it "properly" too though.

Sure, its rightly got the label "tard pack", but I'm guessing that since its still being sold, 12 months on, theres a market for it. Its certainly not a "lie" and I dont see how anyone could say it was. Like dg above says, if you view the core as an incomplete system or "a lie", you could say the same for every console since the end of the 16bit era (and that includes the xbox since you needed the DVD dongle).

The core is the only one that I can think of that was solely designed as a marketing trick to make it look like you can get a next gen console for under £200. I'm not actually saying it should be in this article that peej is putting together, what I am saying is that it was a crock of shit.

As for the last bit of your post, I think 'PS3' covers it. ;)

I don't see why not - all it needs is a memory card (and a game) and it is actually a next-gen game playing device.

And the only consoles that I can remember where that hasn't been the case is the Saturn, Xbox and Wii (and the PS3 eventually).

Oh, and a PC. ;)

XBox 360 failure rates in line with normal electronics industry (No proof, other than EG poll, watchdog (LOL) and MS's refusal to give actual numbers).

Stay on target chaps, there are some good ones here let's not turn this into a daft "cost" troll thread, ta.
All three "next gen" consoles are expensive if you want to fully spec them. End of.

360 will succeed in Japan. It it will sell (or already has, depending on who you read) 10 million consoles before 2007. Bill Gates will personally ensure that Halo 3 will come out at the same time as the PS3 launch, to spoil Sony's sales. All best selling XBox titles will be backward compatible. Microsoft won't support 1080p because no one wants it. DVD is big enough for all 360 games. Winning Eleven is exclusive to 360.

And no doubt, shortly to be followed by MS will never release a 360 with HDMI connector... ;-)
