So, there's a new console being launched next month?

You wouldn't think so looking in the electrical stores and game shops in my part of Germany just now! I'd have thought that there'd be plenty of in-store promotion, but there's absolutely nothing (except stacks of 360s and Wiis).

Is the situation the same in the UK?

Are Sony so confident that they don't think that they need to promote the console for it to sell-out on launch?

Of course they are. Sadly though from what you'd glean checking out preorder sites on the net, they've either done a fantastic job of ensuring that there will be lots of units available - or people really don't give a tinker's fig that the thing's imminent.

Sony UK's commercial director left the company last week. And according to MCV, loads of retailers are pissed off with Sony and its marketing campaign.

Sounds like they've got something of a Stonehenge display system which many stores are too small to take.

A Spinal Tap Stonehenge would probably work ok. ;-)

Yeah, I heard Sony were insisting stores find the space for a sofa, a Bravia TV, Sony surround system and a PS3 O_O

I was in Gamestation over lunch Friday and as I waited at the till, the guy in front was sorting his pre-order for a PS3. The manager told him as he was putting away his bank card (poor sod) "you're number 23 on the list".

This is a fairly small store, in Epsom, UK.

I don't recall if there was any PS3 stuff in the store. I think not.
Still. I expect they'll easily clear their launch allocations. Things will no doubt get very silly very soon.

Cutting it close though isn't it. I recall with both the 360 and the Wii launches, things were a lot more frantic. I mean we're literally talking about a month till launch and still no signs of mania yet.

I bet there are a lot of ebay sellers up and down the land feeling a bit twitchy around the ringpiece though in readiness.

Wasn't the mania due more to the run-up to Chrimbo though?

Perhaps partially...but again even those who are fanatical about picking up a PS3 still aren't exactly sure why. The only single game that stands out as being most mentioned is Motostorm (and once again I'd have to admit that it's the only reason I'd hover over the "add to basket" button). Other than that everyone seems to be hedging their bets on it fulfilling its potential really quickly.

Still, it's not all sweetness and light over at Wii Central either is it? Precisely what I predicted would happen is happening, the thing is being strangled by a lack of releases.

Not to be rude Peej, but you'd hardly have to be Mystic Meg to know a new Ninty home console wouldn't have enough games for it ;)

I've been quite the PlayStation gamer in my time, in fact I used to run a PS2 website. So obviously I'm an ideal Sony customer.

Except there's not a game coming to the system exclusively that I'm excited about at the moment.

If Evo Studios had got a new WRC title ready for launch, instead of the more simplistic Motorstorm, then that would have changed.

This is the thing though, it's a bit of a no-brainer prediction but I do remember a lot of Ninty execs claiming that the Wii would be the best-supported console in Europe yet.

And here we are, watching the tumbleweeds blow through the fucking gaping gaps between releases.

As Rhythm and a few others have surmised, it does at least make you absolutely fanatical about releases when they DO eventually come around :)

Again though, that's like 'Pre-determined console release statement' number 2 in the 'How to release a console' guidebook.

Hmm maybe.

Perhaps more developers are having trouble with just cackhandedly shoving a Wiimote control scheme onto their rubbishy old game IPs than we thought they would have.

Maybe? 0_o

Name me a console where a company exec. hasn't said something along the lines of how their console will be 'the best thing ever and be supported by infinite AAA titles from launch'.

That's not the same as saying "Honestly, we're really not going to shaft Europe this time" from a company that has...well, shafted Europe pretty much ALL the time previously though is it.

All consoles are launched with the promise that they'll be well fed and watered when it comes to games releases but Ninty are just so bloody awful at making good on it, it's quite comical.

What's that got to do with 3rd parties struggling to adopt the control mechanism? Plus we're only 3 months in, bit early to be making sweeping judgements no?

Anyway, the point was you more or less 'predicted' a truism.

Yarse I did, my hand is up, look - it's all true, I stated the bleedin' obvious.

I'm just really nadgery that history's going to repeat itself with a "Home" Ninty console for the 3rd consecutive time.

So, they're too tight to set-up a 'PS3 house' along the same lines as the 'Wii House'? Sony marketing have really gone to shit. Maybe all those years of not having to lift a finger to sell PS2s has made them soft and useless.

Thing is, I think they really do believe that they don't have to market the console to anyone. They firmly believe that it will sell itself, and sell by the bucketload. And they're probably right. We're all weak after all and we're willing to pay any price whatsoever to feed our addiction.

Until Chrimbo, that's entirely right. Why bother spending tons on marketing when you know there's a solid crowd of fans chomping at the bit to get hold of it? By the time Chrimbo arrives there'll be more games (including GTA4) and plenty of word of mouth out there.

Nah, by Chrimbo it will sell phenomenally well for the same reason that the Xbox 360 and the Wii sold so well at that time - Parents trying to ingratiate themselves with their greedy videogame addicted offspring.

...which is why if I buy one at all this year I'll pick one up at the end of my first two modules in August :)

Got an email from Amazon saying they've received more stock than realised and there are additional pre-orders.

Still expensive, though.
