I have always fancied playing one of the dynasty warriors/samurai warriors/ninety nine knights type games. Unfortunately reviews are always middling or point out terrible flaws in them. Interested to know the opinions of any owners on what these games are like. Our asian cousins seem to never tire of them so surely they must be doing something right?

In particular I would be interested in what the best version playable on the 360 in this genre would be and whether it is good enough to pick up cheaply. Examples:

Dynasty Warriors 4/5/empires
Samarai Warriors 2/empires
ninety nine knights

I have only ever played Mystic Heroes (Koei's gamecube offering) in this genre but I did enjoy it at the time.

Ninety Nine Nights is OK on the 360. Sometimes the battles get massive and overwhelming but good fun seeing the utter slaughter you can inflict on thousands of enemies.

TBH though there'll never be another game in this ilk that's as good as Onimusha 3. Jean Reno ftmfw!!

How "OK" is it? 10, 20?

I quite enjoyed the demo but there were a lot of negative reviews of the game which mentioned significant gameplay flaws such as lack of checkpoints, cheap bosses, etc.

I've seen it around for about a tenner and it's probably worth it for that. I've heard people say it's a bit piss easy and repetitive.

If you have a PS2 capable of playing imports, then there's a budget version of Sengoku Basara 2 coming out next week which would be my number 1 recommendation.

N3 is great fun, and certainly the best use of the 360's extra grunt out of those games you mentioned. Easily 20 worth of game.

The Empires games have some strategy sections too, so if you just want pur hack 'n' slash get the vanilla version of DW5 or SW2. Which one of those you prefer probably depends on your preference between Japanese medieval history and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
