Thought I'd start a thread for all you flashcart-enabled punters who aren't averse to a little "YARRR!" ;-)

Heroes of Mana ("Seiken Densetsu Heroes of Mana") Jap version popped up on the usual sites.

Very promising-looking, dev by Brownie Brown who did Magical Starsign. Nice little take on resource-farming - you get Rabites to pick fruit or mine crystals for you :-D
RTS side looks promising, but the path-finding seems a little annoying as units can't walk thru each other so often end up taking fairly bizarre routes :-/

Also, jap version of Prof Layton is out there: "Layton Kyouju to Fushigi na Machi". Beautifully presented and some interesting little puzzles - seems like a cross between a storybook and one of those puzzle magazines you can buy, not sure how much of an adventure game there is to it, but it's so nicely presented that it's a no-brainer pre-order for the US version when it gets announced.

PS - if you like puzzle games, check out Picross and Honeycomb Beat ("Nounai Kakusei Honeycomb Beat"). I checked out HB as Razz raved about it and he's right, it's ace :-)
Picross is bloody addictive as well and is perfect for a UK "Touch Generations" release.

PPS - I mentioned in another thread, but the Jap Sim City is up as well.
More bizarrely, there's one called "Boku ha Koukuu Kanseikan DS" which seems to be an Air Traffic Control sim in a similar vein to Sim City or Theme Park... but basically unplayable if you don't read japanese ;-)

Not long, there's already one for the Wii, complete with that awesome controller.

I'd love to be on the train, playing Densha on a DS. If any kid looks over my shoulder, I'll tell them I'm the driver of the train and I'm controlling it over wifi.

I too thought this was going to be about some kind of weird wristwatch fashioned out of old NES carts.

I played the web demo of Professor Layton, looks charming but too text heavy to play in Japanese.

Unou no Tatsujin: Soukai! Machigai Museum 2 is worth a look - it's a spot the difference kind of thing. Lots of nice art from the folk who do the Taiko games.

I am soon to be flash-enabled. Any recommendations for games/apps? I've heard runour of a comic book viewer and NetHack (w00t).

Those two would ensure that my DS never leaves my side :)

Comic Book DS
It's extremely bloody handy :-)
Also doubles up as a *much* better photo/picture viewer than Moonshell as it's a lot quicker and easier to zoom and flick thru your photos on CBDS - the downside being you have to convert them first and can't just drag n drop jpegs to the flashcart, but if you point PictoDS (the program that makes the converted files that CBDS can read) at a folder full of pics it'll convert it nicely for you.

w00t (not dj - oops), check out DCEmu's NDS pages for all your needs. gbatemp.net is good too for info on releases and that.

Wow, WOPR that Datel thing is a full on flashcard. Ace. I can't believe Nintendo are happy about that.

Btw - if anyone fancies knocking up an article about the legal side of DS Homebrew, there's still 10 days left in the month in order to enter the competition to win a game of your choice for submitting an article.

I'm concerned it will be hobbled in some way compared to something like the R4. Mind you it's 17.99 complete with 128mb card apparently from one online shop.

Hold on... So what exactly do you need for this?

Do they sell a 'bundle' pack for a guy with nothing but a few SD Cards and a Phat DS?

I've looked at this before, but I just get lost... Seems like too many options and bits & bobs to me.

Or, you know, not bizarrely at all, if you'd read my article. :p

But seriously, it amazes me how threads like this seem to cause no-one to bat an eyelid on gaming forums.

Well, TBH I wouldn't have started a thread on this subject on EG, but as AATG seems a little more "relaxed" I thought it'd be okay.

Also, I'd hope you notice that:
1) I haven't *ever* provided a link to a roms site as that can lead to trouble for the forum
2) when I post about a game/Rom it's normally gonna be along the lines of "this is awesome, pre-order it now" - Prof Layton, Heroes of Mana, Sim City; after having a quick shuftie at the jap rom these are all no-brainers that I'm gonna pre-order the US versions from Movietyme, especially given how cheap they are (usually under 20).

But hey, if enough people think it's untoward to talk about ROMs and such, feel free to nuke the thread.
I'd just rather discuss things openly so if I've tried a ROM of a jap game (that I wouldn't have bought anyway as I can't read japanese) and think the US version will be amazing, I'd rather not skirt around the issue of how I know such and such a game is great when it's not out yet etc. etc. ;-)

The thing is the games are out. If you make it a 'Japanese DS games' thread or somesuch, there's no chance (or certainly much less chance) of the discussion going the 'wrong way', if you see what I mean.

You're right ilmaestro - when I started the thread I was gonna use it for heads-up about Jap, US and Euro games, but it seems to have ended up just japanese games.
If a mod wants to change the title to "Latest import DS games" or something, I'll edit my first post so we don't start popping up on the wrong kind of Google searches.

My R4 arrived today, looks well made and nicely boxed. Annoyingly my memory card hasn't turned up yet so it's not a great deal of use yet!

And can we rename this thread perhaps?

I think it's about time I invested in one of these devices to expand my DS's repertoire a little. I haven't picked it up in months and there are no new games that really appeal to me.

So what do I need? Is one of those R4 thingies and a micro SD card all that's required nowadays?

That's all I've ordered yes, got mine from MrModChips. The M3 Simply was out of stock everywhere so I went with the R4. Got a 1gb Sandisk card from Amazon 8.50 incl. post.

Must dig out all my Spectrum files tonight :)

The R4 is pretty much a slightly newer version of the M3 isn't it?

Anyone recommend any decent homebrew games please? I'm not overly fussed on Spectrum emulation etc :(

Info and links here:

Wiki

Best thing is that the DS screens are 256x192, exactly matching the Spectrum so no nasty scaling.

I now have my mini-SD card and I actually laughed out loud when I opened it. Surely memory cards can't get any smaller? I'm going to tape a brick to it to stop me losing it :)

Erm, I don't know yet. But I hope to have it sussed in a few hours time if I can keep away from PGR2. And if I don't lose the fucking memory card under a speck of dust somewhere.

To be more serious, you drag and drop files to the card, put that inside the DS cart, turn on the DS and the front-end should be there. No flashing or anything else.

Before you go shopping though, make sure you get the right *kind* of SD card - there are several different sizes now.
The R4 and M3 use "micro-SD" (which also used to be called "transflash" when they first came out). There are also "mini-SD" cards out there but they are not the same and won't fit the R4, so make sure you get "micro-SD".

Also, if there's a specific homebrew app you're wanting to run, check for compatibility first - but most of the recent stuff all seems to be compatible with R4 and M3 - certainly Comic Book DS and Warcraft: Tower Defense work with my M3 :-)
