Wait six months and see what the price on the PS3 is doing. I'd be amazed if its not lower than it is now...

They'll be as cheap as crap everywhere soon enough, as will HD players. Only possible way they can compete/sustain in the marketplace that's already overstuffed with audiovisual solutions.

Give it time, they'll be stuffing BR/HD players into HD tellies before long. Then things could get really interesting.

The real thing to wait for is the cheap combination drives that play both formats.

I wasn't really approaching it from a HDfilm perspective- the BR player aspect was one of the justifications for the excessively high price of the PS3. A price cut to stand alones removes this from the equation and puts more pressure on a price cut to the PS3. The FT is already saying you can get up to $100 off the RRP of a PS3 in America by shopping around, so this is further pressure imho.

Based on the fact that they expect the PS3 to continue to sell poorly for the rest of the year? I'm not convinced.

Drill down to the TVWeekly article and you get:
On Monday, Sony Electronics President and Chief Operating Officer Stan Glasgow said the company will drop prices on its Blu-ray players significantly this year, possibly as low as $299, which could give Sony an even greater edge in the format war. Currently Blu-ray players retail for $999, compared with HD-DVD players, which retail for $499.

Ah, I see. So the prediction of this being driven by poor PS3 sales is a feeble attempt at the editorial equivalent of trolling.

Eh? I read the article and thought it might see a knock on price reduction on the PS3, which is already being discounted by about 1/5th onlin in America.

Their prediction about giving Sony an even greater edge is on the faulty logic that HD-DVD players will remain static in price.

I took "Stung on PS3 sales, Sony will start eating similar losses on Blu-Ray players by December in an attempt to bring victory to the format" to mean that Wired were predicting that Sony would not see high enough PS3 sales to achieve whatever portion of Blu-ray uptake they expect the PS3 to account for.

I think I could probably get the Toshiba HD-DVD player down Tottenham Court road for less than £300 already. By the time there's more to buy than 'My Perfect Teen Date 14', for £24.99, I'll be ready to pick one up. Balls to the 360 add-on.
