I always used to tense up before going into dark areas in Doom, I hated the jumpiness of head-crabs in Half-Life (and disliked Ravenholme immensely in HL2) and I never finished either of the Xbox Project Zeros.

After playing Condemned for a couple of levels I'm now convinced - I can't handle scary games :-(

I'm the same, I just don't like scary games at all. I have no idea how I got through HL2 - especially Ravenholme.

I don't find being scared fun, so tend to avoid scary games. And I'm scared easily.

Kinda know what you mean. I love all the Silent Hill / Clock Tower / Project Zero style games, but none of them have ever really scared me. Made me jump occasionally, and got a little bit creepy at times, but never scared me. Maybe I'm just too desensitised - the same is true with most horror films as well. Still enjoy them though...

I really enjoyed Project Zero...until about 2-3 hours in when I just couldn't take anymore as the chest pains were really starting to hurt. I had to swapsie it as a result! :o(

Scariest games for me are the Aliens based ones.

Alien Trilogy on PlayStation gave me nightmares.

And I only have to hear the motion tracker spring into life in an AvP game to run for the hills.

I love it when a game manages to scare me. It's one of the highest compliments I can give to a game, because it means it really has me in its claws.

What's not to like about getting scared with no real danger involved at all? :)

Mannequins+that Christmas music looping badly = eek.

Not as scary as hearing VC talking ahead of you in their tunnels while playing Vietcong though, complete darkness, traps everywhere and you're armed with an L-flashlight and an M1911...

Stalker isn't one for the squeamish either.

Must admit 2 bits on Resi 4 scared the living shit out of me, and the head crabs in HL2 were pretty horrible.

I'm OK with Condemned because even though you are scared you are reasonably well equipped to defend yourself. The fear is this situation is good, it keeps you alert.

In other games like the Project Zeroes you are a lot more vulnerable and the urge to just hide in a corner is much greater.

Oh, and 4 days till Penumbra :)

OK, wanna know what does it for me? What actually makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end and the tension feel so tight that you can almost taste it?

Creeping through the undergrowth or being nicely hidden in any of the Ghost Recon games, and knowing that you're the last person alive...and that at any moment, you will hear that horrid "thunk, thunk" noise as your body is once again raddled with enemy bullets. Now THAT'S fear...

I quite like a good scary game.
Running around a virtual world with an eerie atmosphere, pressing on with your nerves on edge and a feeling of discomfort in the pit of your stomach.

How bloody great they can make games like that. It's not a sort of situation you want to encounter in real life (not the monsters or enemies but the actual edge of fear and imminent danger) but it's a great thrill to experience from the safety of your PC chair.

Yep, I've played quite a few games that made me jump. Ravenholme was a good example. I got nervous in certain sections of system shock 2 as well. I would still continue playing a scary game though. It goes with the atmosphere.

I also found Condemened to be somewhat unsettling.

As an interesting parallel I don't know what it is about serial killers and weak female victims but I also found the opening scene to Kiss the Girls to be really unsettling.

Loving Silent Hill 2 at the mo. Walking in through door to hear sudden static on radio and shuffling footsteps.

The scariest for me is still Project Zero II Crimson Butterfly, makes my hair stand on end.

Ghosts are always scarier than monsters!

Actually this thread has reminded me I have a copy of Forbidden Siren I haven't really started yet.

I don't know about "scary" as such, but Call of Cthulu: DCotE where you have to escape the hotel is one of the best heart-in-mouth gaming moments I've ever encountered. Needless to say it took almost a dozen attempts to get right, as its one of those moments that calls for far too much precision given the intensity of your pursuers.

I love genuinely creepy games but I can't play them for long at a time. Condemned was freaking me slightly and that's why I *heart* it. Lots of darkness and shouting, then before you know it there's a nutter trying to take your head off with a pipe.

Hey don't get me wrong. I do get creeped out by these games but I find that an enjoyable experience rather than one I'd like to avoid in the future.

That bit put me off the rest of the game to be honest. You know what's coming, but you can't do anything like climb out onto the window ledge, or lock the room up & sneak into the one next door to sleep. As a set piece it was pretty poorly scripted, I thought.
