Wow am I loving this or what? Yes, I'm a completely newcomer to the game but this is one of the best games I've played it ages. I 'completed' it today (beat Richter)but hadn't explored nearly enough, I just came across him by chance and the game ended. I instantly reloaded and chose another path.

Expect a full review soon.

HAve you played Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin on the DS? They're both similarly awesome.
GBA Double pack with Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow is also great - bargain value for money :-)

Don't have a DS. This is the first Castlevania I've played since it came out on the arcades many moons ago.

I had a go on SOTN on XBLA and TBH, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about - I can see that at the time it was amazing, but the 2 GBA castlevanias in the double pack are both better, and the 2 DS games are even better than that. If you love SOTN, you owe it to yourself to check out the GBA double pack and at least Dawn of Sorrow - it's closer to SOTN than Portrait, but Portrait is ace as well.

PC GBA emulators (e.g virtual boy) should do the job for the double pack, but you really can't beat having a GBMicro in your pocket with the double pack welded in the slot - my mate had a baby recently and borrowed the double pack for passing the time while his wife was in labour. He got hooked to it and I probably won't see that cart again.. oh well.

SOTN has more style than DoS easily. Much more. Fewer features maybe, clunky interface/inventory for certain. But more style.

Having started my Castlevanias somewhere in the GBA games but mainly on the DS, I was amazed at how little the series has moved on since SOTN. DoS feels lifeless compared to SOTN, which has more story and more energy to it. DoS is surely the better game, for me, with tons of replay value and more solid gameplay, but playing SOTN has highlighted how tired DoS is as a game.

I was in Malaysia last year and met this guy who's making religious hats with an ancient Singer by the street, he's the last guy doing it for himself outside of a factory and has nobody to pass on the business to when he retires. I also met a rattan craftsman who makes furniture out of rattan, he's one of the last too. They're clearly masters, having improved since their younger years, but they're old, and they're tired, and they've got no new blood to move the business on.

I'm very tempted to get this after whoring myself out to the two DS versions (100% and 1000% on each Ithankyou). If you're after more of the same then defintely pick up Dawn of Sorrow and Portait of Ruin. They're both great, although I'd say DoS edges it marginally.

The Castlevania games are some of the most pure, proper games you can get your hands on imo. much fun.
